What the heck is energy medicine and energy work anyways?
The purpose of energy medicine is to create homeostasis (the state in which the body naturally maintains its own health) by balancing and supporting the flow of energy through the body. Clear as mud? Let’s break it down.
Energy medicine is based on the premise that energy is everything, from the stars in the universe to the cells and molecules in the human body.
As energy beings living in an ocean of energy, we are surrounded by and emit energy across the spectrum such as electrical, magnetic, light, and subtle.
The National Institute of Health refers to the subtle energy surrounding the body as the human biofield. Other common names are qi, chi and aura.
When the human biofield is disrupted it can cause symptoms such as mood disorders, insomnia or hyperactivity, chronic pain, fatigue, stress related conditions and more.
Energy medicine practitioners support client healing by balancing the flow of subtle energy through a variety of touch and no-touch methods. These methods are often referred to as energy work. A few examples include sound healing through tuning forks or sound bowls, crystal healing, reiki, tapping and more.
Energy medicine has been around as long as humans have. In fact, traditions and practices can be traced back thousands of years on every continent (ok except Antartica). Because of the groundbreaking work of modern mind-body researchers like Deepak Chopra and the late Candace Pert, different forms of energy medicine is now beginning to be practiced in Western hospitals in the form of complementary healthcare.
